I was doing work in a number of Social Security o ffices in the early 2000's and the network installers were still using IBM Type 1 Cable for To ken Ring networks. It was only used to connect to the individual terminals inside the building. They then connected to some sort of system that then communicated via the outside world with, I think, a leased line or fiber links. I heard it was because that was the way the systems were spec’d out years before. I think my mid 2000's they were starting to use CAT5 internally.
Back then for cameras I remember using RG-11 (14ga coax) for 1000 foot CCTV runs in large warehouses. They were just starting using network links and they had fiber but it was really $$ and only used to connect cameras in buildings in one compound to a main security room.
